The San Francisco Chronicle: Day 4
Today was another great day in San Francisco, bringing with it many new culinary experiences that I wish to share with you. We had one and a half meals to report on today, so in the spirit of this blog I have decided to include our lunch, even though it was not exactly a normal meal.
Lunch:
Our lunch came during our trip to a local national park, and therefore was not the normal sit-down meal I have been reporting on. The place was called the Warming Hut and contained
a gift shop along with a lunch selection with a soup of the day and an assortment of sandwiches. Many of the items were served with recycled paper or cups, and it was obvious that the environment was an important piece of the huts ambiance. I decided to order a chicken curry sandwich, which was promptly pulled out of a refrigerator in a pre-wrapped package much to my surprise. When ordering my entrée I had originally thought would be a delightfully warm collection of chicken curry, instead it was a cold sandwich with raisons and chicken curry. Considering these major setbacks, the meal was decent, however not at all worth the $8 I paid for it. The warming shack needed to be more obvious that its sandwiches were cold and here lays my true intent on writing this portion of the blog. This section is a warning to the general public. THE CHICKEN CURRY IS COLD NOT WARM. I think that solves those problems…
Dinner:
As was the case for our first lunch of the trip, we were allowed to go out in small groups and find our own restaurants for dinner tonight. The largest contrast was that this time we found a diamond in the rough in a restaurant called Lou’s. The people at Lou’s like to listen to the blues and serve American cuisine along with fresh fish on its prime location right off the end of Jones Street. It sports both indoor and outdoor tables along with a small bar area and a very good atmosphere. Our intent on our search for a restaurant was to find good buffalo wings without going to the chain Hooters, and Lou’s was the right place to go. They were the correct combination of meat and heat and were definitely a must for anyone attending Lou’s. Next came a citrus salmon entrée with french fries. The salmon was cooked perfectly, however the citrus was not up to par with the rest of the meal. This meant that the salmon lacked the finishing touch that is important on a fish dish. The fries were acceptable. The service at Lou’s was great considering that we initially were a party of 5 and slowly increased to a party of 8, and they managed to keep up well until we asked them for separate checks. Without a doubt the buffalo wings were the shining piece of the night. The most serious problem was that since it was on an obvious tourist street, the prices were higher then they should have been, primarily the salmon that was over twenty dollars where I could have had the same meal at an Indiana restaurant for almost half. If it had been cheaper, it definitely would have made more
of a run on the standings list, however the price and citrus flavor hurt its chances. Oh, and presentation was awful.
Current Standings:
- Osakaya
- Farmers Market
- Park Chow
- Cucina Toscana
- Lou’s
