What I thought was interesting from the movie were the differences between the citizens responses from the San Francisco earthquake and resulting fire from other natural disasters. In San Francisco, many of the citizens voluntarily helped to clean up the city. This was very important because it showed their dedication to rebuilding this unique place. During later disasters like Hurricane Katrina, fewer citizens were able to help with the actual rebuilding. In many ways the responses were similar, however in more recent disasters we have been fortunate enough to not completely segregate a race of people as the San Franciscans did with the Chinese. It seemed like the dedication to rebuild the city was very strong and continued until it surpassed its predicator state, which is very different from natural disasters now. The technology of the time resulted in the expansion of problems rapidly because the earthquake destroyed the fire hydrants therefore allowing the fires to spread across the wooden buildings. This chain reaction was very much like when the levies broke in Katrina elevating the crisis to unbelievable levels with flooding that spread disease. As with many other disasters, notably the World Trades Center crisis, a strong increase in nationalism occurred as a direct result of the events. This was very prevalent in the San Francisco earthquake because of the great involvement of the national media and the help that was supplied to the city. While our techniques with fighting and slowing down natural disasters have changed dramatically, it is obvious that many things have remained the same when Americans are faced with these disasters.
