Creepy Crawly Things
This morning when I went into my garage, something ran across the floor and outside, and I have no idea what. Regardless of what it was, it scared the living crap out of me. While seemingly irrelevant, this relates greatly to the passage that connected with me, the first paragraph of chapter 18, Months of Peril. In this paragraph, Linda is hiding for her life from the runaway slave catchers, and she is scared out of the house and into the bush for a few hours. While in the bush, she is maliciously attacked by an unknown assailant. A reptile. She was bitten by the unknown reptile and then kicked it off her leg, but was forced to continue hiding in the bush with the snake. This passage connected with me because of the fear it instilled within me, not solely for Linda’s life, but also for the unknown qualities of her attacker. The element she uses in this passage is mystery of what attacked her and the feeling of having to stay in the bush while the pain in her leg increased. It scared me therefore it was extremely successful. I guess the garage was relevant…
